Last week, I attended a phenomenal presentation by Danielle Taylor of Strategic Disruption Consulting. The topic was "Community-Centric Fundraising: Raising Money without Sacrificing Community Dignity." Danielle walked us through the deficit-based narratives nonprofits often use when describing the communities we serve; the way these narratives paint communities as statistics or problems to be solved; and how shifting to asset-based narratives leads to a more expansive understanding of communities' lived experiences and contexts.

Danielle's approach to this subject was nuanced and powerful, and I walked away with a better understanding of the fact that every choice we make in our language means and reinforces something about ourselves, potential donors, and the communities we engage. As nonprofit professionals, we can choose to center community deficits or community dignity -- and how we choose matters, not just in that moment, but in the ripple effects of thought and action our language produces over time.

This presentation was one of the best I've attended in my 15 years working in the nonprofit sector. Based on this experience, I highly recommend Strategic Disruption Consulting!
